Canal Winchester’s community garden is filling up fast, and residents interested in plots are encouraged to register soon.

“Out of 55 plots, we only have 12 left, so we hope to see those go quick,” city Development Director Lucas Haire said last week.

This is the sixth year for Canal Winchester’s community garden, located off Waterloo Street in the grassy area known as Emma’s Meadow. The garden is behind Bolenbaugh Hardware.

Each plot measures 10 feet by 20 feet, is pre-tilled by the Rotary Club of Canal Winchester, and is available free on a first-come, first-served basis for city residents.

City Administrator Diane Mays said applications are available at the municipal building or on the city website. Plots will be assigned on April 30.

Mays said there is no water available on site, so many gardeners use large drums or jugs to bring water in.

For gardeners who have bountiful harvests, the city works with the Community Food Pantry to accept donations of fresh produce throughout the growing season, Mays said.
