The end of summer is quickly approaching, which means Canal Winchester’s Labor Day Festival isn’t far away.
City officials expect this year’s festival will be another great event.
Mayor Michael Ebert said the 93rd annual Labor Day Parade’s grand marshals will be representatives of family businesses that have been operated by the same family in Canal Winchester for 30 or more years.
“Each year, the Labor Day Committee nominates and votes for candidates to be the parade grand marshal and the nominations are a collection of worthy individuals, businesses or groups of people, as determined by the committee,” Ebert said. “This year’s final choice, the Canal Winchester Family Run Business, comprises a group of people that have helped build Canal Winchester into a great place to call home.”
The Labor Day Committee is compiling a list of local businesses that fall into this particular category for inclusion in the parade. The committee is asking that any business owners who believe they meet the designation email www.cw-laborday.org.
“These are the businesses that many of us have gone to with our hands out, asking for sponsorship for our recreation league teams, and that our sons and daughters go to as Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts because they can always depend on them for a donation of goods and services,” Ebert said. “These are the families that put their heart and soul into their businesses, and through their sweat and hard work, helped to build the village of Canal Winchester into the city that it is today.”
This year’s Labor Day Festival begins at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 31, and runs through 6 p.m., Monday, Sept. 2, in downtown Canal Winchester.
The parade will take place Monday morning.
According to Ebert, this year’s festival will again include the Peggy Wood Scholarship Pageant, kiddie tractor pulls, the Alumni Scholarship Association 5K Run-Walk, Kingy’s hospitality tent, the annual car show cruise-in, live music and other entertainment.
The Labor Day Committee also plans to offer special wristband pricing for the festival rides.
“There will be great food, arts and craft vendors, and rides and games throughout the entire weekend,” Ebert said. “We’re hoping for great weather this year and I’m really looking forward to it all.”
