Canal Winchester elected officials will serve the public in a more personal way May 22 at the second annual Kris Sims Memorial Relay For Life Dinner.
Mayor Michael Ebert and members of Canal Winchester City Council will be the waiters and waitresses for the evening. The meal will be served from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Frances Steube Community Center, 22 S. Trine St. The cost is $10 adults and $5 for children age 10 and younger.
Cash or checks will be accepted. Guests will be seated on a first-come, first-served basis.
“Make sure to bring your appetite and plenty of money for tips,” city Construction Services Administrator Bill Sims said. “We’ll serve a house salad, bread, spaghetti and meatballs, iced tea, lemonade, coffee and dessert.”
All tips and dinner proceeds will benefit the city’s Relay For Life team, dubbed The Village People, of which Sims is captain.
The dinner is named for Sims’ late wife, Kris, who helped start Canal Winchester’s Relay For Life. She volunteered with the organization until she succumbed to her own battle with cancer in March 2012.
Besides the dinner itself, there will be a 50-50 raffle, and prize tickets will be sold for items to be awarded during the Relay For Life event June 7 and 8 at the Canal Winchester High School football field.
Organizers for the second annual Courage, Conquer, and Cure 5K run also will have a table set up at the dinner for anyone interested in registering for the race.
Donations to Relay For Life are tax-deductible and receipts will be made available.
“While reservations are not being accepted for the dinner itself, advance notice of attendance is appreciated to help plan appropriately,” Sims said.
