Organizers of Canal Winchester’s Community Recycling Day hope the April 27 event will be a “one-stop opportunity” for area residents and businesses.

Recycling Day is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Canal Winchester High School, 300 Washington St., and will include both recycling and shredding services.

“We’re going to host it in the high school’s circular drive so it will make for an easy-in and easy-out flow of traffic,” organizer Rick Brown said. “The event will be open to businesses and residents alike, offering certified recycling for free, like grinding up hard-drives and shredding documents with sensitive information.”

According to Brown, Electronic Recycling Services will be on hand to recycle electronics with “certificates of destruction in accordance with ISO and WEEE standards.”

Recyclable electronics will include all types of computers and networking equipment, copiers, FAX machines, cash registers, entertainment systems, cell phones and telephone systems. There is no limit to the number of electronics that can be dropped off for recycling, however, no wet-cell batteries or kitchen appliances will be accepted.

Brown said Cintas will provide an on-site mobile shredding unit to securely and confidentially shred documents for free. Each person or business is limited to four (12- by 12- by 24-inch) boxes of paper and light cardboard to be shredded.

Cintas will not shred plastic, CDs or DVDs, or metal, although staples are OK, Brown said.

The city also has invited Goodwill Industries to be on hand to collect donations of gently used clothing, furniture and other household items.

“We really wanted this to be a one-stop opportunity for people to clean out their old stuff and not have it end up in a landfill,” Brown said. “We hope the event draws a good crowd and then maybe next year, we’ll expand it even further.”
