Canal Winchester City Council agreed unanimously June 2 to suspend the rules and approve emergency legislation to hire a new events and communications coordinator by mid-July.

The person hired will be responsible for community informational and educational programs through partnerships with businesses, community groups and other entities; will coordinate promotional and special events for the city; and will produce a variety of informational materials and publications.

Wages for this exempt position will be $18.20 to $25.73 an hour.

Carrie Hoover resigned as community affairs coordinator in 2011. Since then, the staff has managed by spreading her responsibilities across departments.

However, according to Mayor Michael Ebert, with the approaching retirement of Donna Warren from her job at the Frances Steube Community Center, her responsibilities as senior citizen coordinator will shift to center coordinator Linda Tennison, and the new hire will also take on some of the community center coordination responsibilities.

Warren will leave at the end of July.

“With Donna retiring from the community center, we need someone who can take over more of this work,” Councilman Steve Donahue said.

The new events and communications coordinator will report directly to Construction Services Administrator Bill Sims, with immediate supervision by the mayor as well.

Councilwoman Bobbie Mershon said she would like to see more community center responsibilities attached to the new position.

Donahue and Councilman Will Bennett said they were glad the city would once again have a single person committed to working on newsletters, press releases and other communications.

“I think there should be more importance put into the community newsletter, which hasn’t been there since Carrie Hoover left,” Donahue said. “You’ve all done a good job but more of this information needs to get out.”
