Canal Winchester officials are asking residents to take part in two events aimed at keeping the community safe.
For the fourth year running, the city will participate in National Drug Take-Back Day on Saturday, Sept. 27.
From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., unused, expired medications can be brought to the Diley Ridge Medical Center, 7911 Diley Road, to be properly disposed of on behalf of the Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office and the Drug Enforcement Administration. No liquid medications will be accepted.
Mayor Michael Ebert said this will again be done as a “drive-through” drop-off, making it a fast, easy and anonymous way to get rid of prescription drugs. Properly disposing of unwanted medicines will keep them out of the hands of drug-abusers and prevent the medicine from polluting water sources and landfills, according to organizers.
“Since we joined this program in 2011, we have taken in more than 240,000 prescription pills, including 98 pounds of pills last spring,” Ebert said. “We hope everyone in the area will take advantage of this opportunity to dispose of their expired and unwanted medications.”
Canal Winchester also is preparing for the seventh annual tire sweep of Walnut Creek, scheduled to start at 8 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 4.
Volunteers are asked to meet at the Metro Park Office, 6723 Lithopolis Road. Employees from the city’s storm water department will work with volunteers to remove tires from a portion of the Walnut Creek basin extending from Gender Road to Lithopolis Road, including Walnut Woods Metro Park.
