Groveport City Council has adopted a new city flag design after months of discussing themes and layouts.

In June 2013, Councilwoman Jean Ann Hilbert pointed out that since Groveport had grown from a village to a city, the old village flag should be updated, something she said hadn’t been done since the early 1990s.

“This flag’s been around for a long time,” Mayor Lance Westcamp said. “I can’t believe we’ve overlooked that, but this is an opportunity now to give it an update.”

After taking input from residents and staff, as well as working with local flag designer and producer Mary Leavitt, owner of The Flag Lady’s Flag Store in Columbus, a new green and white flag featuring the motto “Central Ohio’s Hometown” and the Groveport city seal will soon be seen flying at all city-owned buildings.

Councilman Ed Dildine worked with Leavitt on the details.

“Right now, none of our other buildings (except the municipal building) have Groveport flags hanging in them,” Dildine said. “I’d like to see one in each building and some for the outlying areas of town.”

According to Dildine, the pricing for double-sewn, outdoor quality flags in the 4-feet by 6-feet size will be $693 each, while indoor-size double-sewn flags measuring 3 feet by 5 feet will cost $630 each. A silkscreened flag measuring 3 feet by 5 feet will cost $203.

“The double-sewn are not cheap, but they’re a lifetime warranty,” Dildine said. “When we got our honor guard flag and a few stitches came loose, she redid it, no questions asked.”

The city is considering the possibility of offering flags for sale to residents and businesses as well. Those options may include a single-sided silkscreened version for about $40 a flag, but those details have yet to be worked out, according to City Administrator Marsha Hall.
