The Canal Winchester Area Chamber of Commerce celebrated the business community’s successes from the past year at its annual awards dinner March 14, with a look toward further economic growth in 2014.
The 2013 Pillar of the Community award went to longtime local businessman Bob McDorman, who is building the McDorman Automotive Museum at 45 E. Waterloo St. He was honored for his “history of service to the community, character, civic leadership and commitment to Canal Winchester.”
The 2013 Business of the Year award was presented to Diley Ridge Medical Center in recognition of its “entrepreneurial spirit and promotion of the Canal Winchester business community” and the 2013 Business Person of the Year award was presented to chamber President Amanda Lemke for her “work ethic, leadership, and contribution to the business community.”
This year’s dinner at the Crossroads Church in Lithopolis drew about 120 people, with 17 businesses taking part in a pre-dinner expo.
Lemke said the theme, “Emerald Isle,” was chosen to reflect the local business community’s place in the global marketplace, with a nod to a chamber-sponsored business travel program to Ireland taking place in September.
“Canal Winchester is continuing its path of business growth and expansion in 2014,” she said. “As Canal Winchester’s businesses continue to grow and provide options for residents and visitors, its community heritage remains strong and vibrant, positioning it as one of central Ohio’s rising suburban hot spots.”
Lemke pointed out that several new businesses are opening in the historic district, while a number of ribbon-cutting ceremonies are in the works for new-business expansions and redevelopments at the Canal Pointe Industry and Commerce Park and along Diley Road.
According to Lemke, these are good indicators of the area remaining relevant and strong in the global economy.
In Canal Winchester’s historic downtown, Lemke said the chamber was thrilled to welcome the new Sticks and Stones Studio which opened March 15 in the old Bolenbaugh Hardware storefront.
Co-owner Kay Dunson said the business, offering painted vintage furniture, lamps, jewelry and gifts, enjoyed “a terrific opening day.”
“We had a huge turnout and met lots of wonderful people who came in to see the shop,” she said.
