A new public relations officer will join the Groveport Madison Local School District Aug. 11 as part of a staff shift that includes a new role for Dee Copas, the current director of communications.
Superintendent Bruce Hoover said Mary Guiher will be the district’s new, full-time PR officer. She will be paid a base salary of $66,000 per year, plus benefits.
“Mary joins us from the Granville Exempted Village School District, where she successfully served in a similar role,” Hoover said.
“Mary brings to our district much more knowledge and experience in community development and external communication, and will help us greatly improve our responsiveness to our community’s ideas and concerns.
“She will help us improve student learning and engage our community in the many opportunities our schools have to offer,” he said.
The position of director of communications is being eliminated. Copas has agreed to assume a new role as federal programs director, while expanding her responsibilities in the development of early-learning programs, Hoover said.
“With Mrs. Copas’ expertise in the role of federal programs director, we will be better able to evaluate the need and effectiveness of existing services and develop new early-learning programs to help our parents and students be better prepared for early success,” he said. “She will utilize her knowledge and experience to create early-learning opportunities for parents and students across our district, and give them a solid foundation as they prepare for school and college.”
Board of education member Nathan Slonaker said Copas is a good fit for the new job.
“This was a needed void to fill in our administration, and Dee is better suited and qualified to lead this important work,” Slonaker said.
According to Hoover, the position of public relations officer was posted both internally and externally and interviews were completed over the course of a month.
“I am excited to have two very knowledgeable and talented people like Mary and Dee to help our district improve learning and improve communications for all of our district’s residents,” he said.
