Two community events planned for Saturday, April 26, will give residents a chance to donate recyclable materials and get rid of unused prescription drugs.
The recycling event will run from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Canal Winchester High School parking lot, 300 Washington St.
Prescription medicines can be disposed of from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at a drive-through station that will be set up in the Diley Ridge Medical Center parking lot, 7911 Diley Road.
Both events are free and open to the public.
Drug Take-Back Day
Canal Winchester Mayor Michael Ebert said the city and Diley Ridge Medical Center, in partnership with the Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency, have collected more than 200,000 prescription pills since 2011, when they first participated in National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day.
“Studies show that prescription drug abuse is often tied to medications from family and friends, including those readily available in home medicine cabinets,” Diley Ridge Medical Center President Jodi Wilson said. “It is important to have a method to dispose of unused medication in order to reduce prescription drug abuse.”
Another concern for communities, according to Water Reclamation Manager Steve Smith, is the increased level of toxins being found in waterways and landfills due to the improper disposal of prescription drugs — including flushing them down the toilet.
“I hope everyone will take advantage of this opportunity to dispose of their unwanted and expired prescription pills and tablets,” Ebert said. “And I want to thank Diley Ridge Medical Center for allowing us the use of their property as the drop-off location once again, and a big thank you to all the volunteers who help make these events possible.”
Recycling Day
The community recycling event will include electronic recycling by Accurate IT Services and secure and confidential document-shredding services from Cintas.
Each person and business is limited to four boxes of materials to be shredded. Cintas will shred mixed office paper, light cardboard and similar materials. It will not shred plastic, compact discs, DVDs or other metal besides paper clips or staples.
Recyclable electronics include computers of all types, networking equipment, cellphones, copiers, VCRs, telephone systems, radios, laboratory electronics, cash registers, CD players, fax machines, stereos and cables. No wet-cell batteries or kitchen appliances will be accepted.
There is no limit to the amount of electronics that can be brought, but there is a fee of $10 each to recycle tube-style televisions and monitors.
Representatives from Goodwill Industries will also be on hand to accept donations of gently used clothing, furniture and household items.
