Canal Winchester will host the third annual Courage, Conquer and Cure 5K this October, with race organizers looking for a total “pink out” of the city’s historic downtown.
The event began in 2012 through the efforts of local breast cancer survivors Angie Abel and Jodi Brown, who continue to serve as organizers.
Courage, Conquer and Cure 5K benefits the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research at the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center-Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute.
It will begin at 7 a.m. Oct. 4, with racers heading off from the starting line, 36 S. High St., at 8 a.m.
As part of the James 5K Race Series, the event includes a competitive run, a fun run-walk and a children’s race. Tracy Townsend of WBNS-10TV will emcee, with entertainment provided by local cover band Bad Influence and comic-magician David McCreary.
“The first 100 children to finish the kids’ race will receive a free cake-pop from Fantasy Cupcake,” Abel said. “The past two years, we have had approximately 800 participants each year, and raised a total of about $50,000 for the fund.”
The James 5K Race Series features five annual events that reach more than 3,200 participants, according to Abel. She said proceeds from these races benefit different cancer research efforts, including breast, leukemia, lung, multiple myeloma and sarcoma cancers. More than $247,000 is raised annually.
Wendy Garbrandt, a returning participant and breast cancer survivor from Lancaster, said she is thankful to the event organizers for providing more than just support to the Stefanie Spielman Fund.
“Angie and Jodie have provided a wonderful race for people to not only support the Stefanie Spielman Fund, but also (created) a network of survivors, especially young survivors that are able to offer support and encouragement along our journey,” Garbrandt said.
Registration for the timed, competitive run is $35; the fee for the fun run-walk is $30; and the fee for the children’s race is $12. Parking for the event is free, with overflow parking at the city pool, 180 Groveport Road.
