Canal Winchester Human Services has come up with a way to turn donations to the Community Food Pantry into sweet treats for the givers.

“Treat Day Thursday” will run from noon until 2 p.m. Thursdays through Aug. 14. Every person who brings two or more items to the Canal Winchester Municipal Pool, 180 Groveport Pike, for donation to the food pantry will receive a treat and a chance to win a new bicycle donated by Walmart.

The winner of the bicycle will be selected Aug. 14.

“We’re very excited to partner with the city of Canal Winchester to bring awareness to the issue of hunger in our community,” Canal Winchester Human Services Administrator Penny Miller said.

“Hunger is a basic need that cannot be ignored. In the past 12 months, more than 88,000 meals have been distributed through the Choice Pantry and 21,327 meals were distributed during the past school year through the Feeding Our Future Project,” Miller said.

“Every week, new families are asking for assistance at the pantry and the numbers keep growing.”

She said many students who rely on receiving a free breakfast and lunch at school do not have those meals available to them during the summer. This means summer can be extremely challenging for families that already struggle with issues of hunger, Miller said.

“At the same time, food donations to the Community Food Pantry are down in the summer, as many groups and organizations who provide food drives do not meet in the summer and people in general do not donate during the summer as they do other times throughout the year,” she said.

In addition to Treat Day Thursday, donations are accepted between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., Monday through Friday, at the Community Food Pantry, 360 W. Waterloo St.

In addition to nonperishable food and household items, tax-deductible financial donations are also accepted.
