In Canal Winchester, the Village People don’t wear costumes and sing about the YMCA.

They don aprons and serve spaghetti to raise money to fight cancer.

Canal Winchester’s elected officials will wait tables May 21 at the third annual Kris Sims Memorial Relay For Life Dinner. Proceeds from the sale of tickets — along with whatever tips the waiters and waitresses earn — will go to Relay For Life.

The meal will be served from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 21, at the Frances Steube Community Center, 22 S. Trine St.

The cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children age 10 and younger; cash, checks or credit cards are accepted. Tickets may be purchased in advance at the Municipal Building during regular business hours, or at the door.

Donations to Relay For Life, a program of the American Cancer Society, are tax-deductible and receipts will be made available. Guests will be seated on a first-come, first-served basis.

Acting as team captain for the Village People is a labor of love for Bill Sims, Canal Winchester’s construction services administrator.

The annual fundraising dinner is named for his late wife, Kris, who helped start Canal Winchester’s Relay For Life event. She volunteered with the organization until she succumbed to her own battle with cancer in March 2012.

“The Relay For Life and fundraising for cancer research were very important for Kris,” Sims said. “She had been doing it since 1993, long before she had cancer herself.”

He said he and his family are grateful for the community’s continued support of this event.

“Make sure to bring your appetite and plenty of money for tips,” he advised. “We’ll serve a house salad, bread, spaghetti and meatballs, iced tea, lemonade, coffee and dessert.”

Besides the dinner itself, there will be a 50-50 raffle.

Canal Winchester’s Relay For Life is scheduled to start at 1 p.m., Saturday, June 21, at the Canal Winchester High School football field, 100 Washington St.
