Future of vacated city job uncertain

Canal Winchester officials are undecided about whether to fill the recently vacated community affairs director position, divide the work among other staff members or develop a new job description.

Carrie Hoover resigned as community affairs director Sept. 6 to take a job as the public affairs and communication manager for Vermont Energy’s Efficiency Smart program. Her last day with the city was Sept. 12.

“There will have to be some type of replacement, but I don’t know if we’ll do a full-time community affairs position only or if it’ll be a multiple of responsibilities or what,” Mayor Michael Ebert said. “We need to spend some time to figure out what works best for us.”

The current description for the community affairs director job lists the salary range as being between $44,000 and $61,000, according to Ebert.

A timeline for making a decision about the position has not been set, according to the city’s human resources coordinator, Nancy Stir.

“We’ll have to wait and see what the mayor and staff decides, then we’ll go from there,” Stir said.

Ebert said that currently, city finance director Nanisa Osborn is taking on the distribution of press releases. Putting together the press releases themselves will have to be “a group effort,” he said.

“We haven’t set a time to get this done yet and we aren’t going to rush into it,” Ebert said. “We’d rather do it right than just do it to get it over with.

“Right now, it’s hard doing these (press releases) as a group effort. Once we decide how we’re going to deal with it, we’ll advertise the position internally first and then, if necessary, use an outside posting.”

According to Ebert, if a replacement position is posted for outside applicants, it will first be announced on the city’s website at www.canalwinchesterohio.gov.
