The calendar says it’s spring — despite recent unseasonably cold temperatures — and registration is again under way for the Canal Winchester Community Garden.

Garden plots measuring 10 feet by 20 feet in the grassy public area located behind Bolenbaugh Hardware, 4 E. Waterloo St., are available free to residents on first-come, first-served basis.

The spot is commonly referred to as Emma’s Meadow.

There will be 55 plots available this year, which the Canal Winchester Rotary Club will again till and mark off before planting starts.

“Households may request more than one plot, but additional plots will only be assigned if there are plots still available after each household requesting a plot has received one,” garden organizer Diane Mays said. “All plots will be allocated on a first-come, first serve basis, so anyone interested is encouraged to turn in the agreement forms as soon as possible.”

Plots will be assigned beginning April 30. Registration packets are available online at canalwinchesterohio.gov or at the municipal building, 36 S. High St.

“Everyone who participates in the community garden will be responsible for taking care of their designated space, including supplying water to their plot because there isn’t water service at the site, and removing any plants or other gardening materials by Nov. 1,” Mays said.

The community garden is a joint venture between the city and the Rotary Club. Gardeners are encouraged to donate a portion of their fresh produce during the season to the Community Food Pantry.

Canal Winchester Human Services Administrator Penny Miller said the pantry is always looking for sources of good, fresh produce and the partnership with the community garden has been helpful.

“We’re really looking forward to another season of fresh produce coming from our own community,” Miller said.

Information about the community garden and how to register is available from Mays at 614-837-7501 or by emailing dmays@canalwinchesterohio.gov.
