The annual Canal Winchester Historical Society Clean-Up Day is back, just in time to get the city ready for its annual Labor Day Festival.

Volunteers are needed to come to the downtown historical complex from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Friday, Aug. 9, to help clean up the O.P. Chaney Grain Elevator, the one-room Prentiss School House building and the Hocking Valley “Queen of the Line” Railroad Depot, including the two cabooses that were renovated in 2011.

The complex is located at the corner of North High and West Oak streets.

“There will be plenty of opportunities for people of all ages to help us clean up our complex,” said Joy Habegger, historic society board member. “What could be better than lending a hand and helping to keep our community looking great? Many hands make light work!”

According to Michael Ippoliti, board president, the historical society is working with the city this year to help with removal of clean-up day debris and freshening the paint on the O.P. Chaney Grain Elevator. He said he’s hoping for another 15 to 20 volunteers for the rest of the day’s work.

“We ask that our board and members come out and help, as well as other volunteers to help keep the complex neat and clean and a source of pride for our community,” Ippoliti said.

No registration is necessary — volunteers should just show up willing to work.

“We’ll have tools and cleaning supplies for trimming bushes and raking outside, as well as for dusting and general cleaning inside the buildings,” Ippoliti said. “If anyone wants to bring some cleaning supplies with them as a donation, we will take that, too.”

He suggested that volunteers bring their own gloves.
