Area residents are invited to participate in remembrances of the nation’s fallen soldiers, which will include a parade and special presentations at two area cemeteries.

The two scheduled events in Canal Winchester and Groveport are free and open to the public, and will take place rain or shine.

Memorial Day originated as a commemoration of fallen Union and Confederate soldiers following the end of the American Civil War, but eventually expanded to include all fallen U.S. soldiers.

American Legion Post 220 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10523 will hold their annual Memorial Day services at 10:30 a.m., Monday, May 26, at Union Grove Cemetery, located at the corner of Winchester Pike and Cemetery Road.

American Legion Auxiliary President Pat Hartman said the event often attracts 250-300 people.

“Pastor Ray Richards of the Faith Assembly of God will deliver the message at the memorial and the American Legion’s Buckeye Boys State and Girls State high school delegates, Aaron Graber and Marchella Bardelang, will each speak,” she said.

Music and a 21-gun salute also will be part of the program, Hartman said.

The Motts Military Museum is coordinating the annual Groveport Memorial Day Parade, which will begin at 1:15 p.m. Monday, May 26, at the corner of Main and Front streets. It will proceed to the Groveport Cemetery at the corner of Wirt Road and College Street.

Carl Price, commander of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Buckeye Chapter 500, will be the guest speaker at the memorial service itself, which will begin at 1:30 p.m. with the arrival of the parade at the cemetery.
