Funeral services are scheduled at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 26, at Asbury South United Methodist Church, 4760 Winchester Pike, for Madison Township Police Chief Michael E. Ratliff, who died unexpectedly June 22 after a brief battle with cancer.
Township officials are remembering Ratliff for his positive attitude and dedication.
“It’s truly a loss for the township staff and residents,” Trustee Victor Paini said. “Mike served the township with distinction for many years and was one of the most dedicated folks to the township that I’ve come across.
“It was a pleasure to serve with him. I’ll miss his knowledge, positive attitude, willingness to do the right thing for residents, his demeanor and his engaging smile. He will certainly be missed by many and tough to replace.”
Ratliff, 60, worked his way up the ranks of the police department, starting his career 34 years ago as a reserve officer. He was appointed chief last July.
He was a member of the Ohio Chief’s Association, Fraternal Order of Police and American Legion Post 283 in Pickerington. He also operated a small family business, Ratliff Builders Inc.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Sue Geiger Ratliff; his children, Todd (Misty) Ratliff and Dawn (Kevin) Camac; grandchildren, Kennedy, Kate, Riley and Abbie; his father, William (Norma) Ratliff; many brothers and sisters, and special friends. In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Rish Ratliff, and his in-laws, Floyd and Virginia Geiger.
Trustees granted Ratliff a medical leave of absence in early June but he was expected to return to work in July.
Capt. Ken Braden and Sgt. Donald Skinner were named interim chief and captain, respectively, of the police department while Ratliff was on leave. They will continue in those interim posts until a permanent replacement is named for the chief.
When trustees voted on the interim appointments and Ratliff’s leave of absence, Trustee Gary McDonald praised Ratliff for the “progressive and positive command” he brought to the department.
“Our department and community are fortunate to have such a knowledgeable, dedicated and caring individual,” McDonald had said.
